Connection between Constipation and your Diet

There is a strong correlation between constipation and diet. The foods you eat, and your overall dietary habits can significantly impact your digestive health, potentially leading to constipation if not managed properly.

Here are some of the key factors that you should consider:

  • Lack of Fibre: A low-fibre diet is a common cause of constipation. Fibre adds bulk to your stool and helps it move easier through the digestive system. Insufficient fibre intake can result in hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass.
  • Inadequate Water Intake: Dehydration can lead to constipation. Staying well-hydrated is essential for maintaining healthy bowel movements, as water helps soften stool and facilitate its passage.
  • Inadequate Intake of Vegetables, Fruits, and Berries: Vegetables, fruits, and berries are great sources of fibre and provide essential vitamins and minerals that support digestive health. Inadequate intake of these foods can increase the risk of constipation.
  • High Intake of Processed Foods: Processed foods, especially those high in sugar and fat and low in fibre, can contribute to constipation.
  • High Intake of Processed Grains: Relying heavily on refined grains, such as white bread and white rice, can be detrimental to digestive health. These foods lack fibres and nutrients present in whole grain alternatives.
  • Excessive Caffeine and Alcohol Consumption: Both caffeine and alcohol can dehydrate the body, potentially leading to constipation if consumed in excess.
  • High Intake of Dairy: Some people are lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy products, and therefore might experience digestive discomfort and constipation after dairy consumption. Consuming excessive dairy can be a contributing factor, also if it takes space from eating vegetables, fruits, and berries.

To prevent or alleviate constipation, consider making dietary changes that promote healthy digestion:

  • Increase your fibre intake by consuming more vegetables (especially raw), fruits, berries, legumes, and whole grains.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay well-hydrated.
  • Limit your intake of processed, low-fibre and sugary foods.
  • Monitor your caffeine and alcohol consumption.
  • Pay attention to any food sensitivities or intolerances, such as lactose intolerance.

It is essential to maintain a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods to support optimal digestive function and prevent constipation.

If you continue to experience chronic constipation despite dietary changes, consult GP or gastroenterologist for a thorough evaluation and personalised advice.
